Before heading out onto the island, the students were told the rules....and what happens if they don't follow them:

Our first stop at the island was the Settlement site where we learned the trade of a carpenter and how different classes of settlers lived on the site:

Cape Hatteras

Cold. Wet. Foggy.  At least we got to see it though.....and the trail it left when it was moved!

Somerset Place

When we arrived at the Somerset Place, it was kind of cold....

Huddled up for warmth!

Our first stop was at the plantation Hospital where we learned all about teeth pulling, blood letting, bone mending and leeches.  Not very appetizing right after lunch!  We also learned that they would bathe many people in the same tub, then turn around and use the water to wash the floors.  Ew.  Germs were not known about back in those times, which would account for the high death ratio.  Another interesting fact was that childbirth was the number one killer followed by setting yourself on fire in the kitchen!

One of the houses had scratches where a BEAR had risen up and marked his "territory."  Kind of spooky that the people living there had to deal with alligators, snakes and bears when most dwellings had NO glass in the windows!

We entered the Collins Family Mansion through the front door, which only the richest white people were allowed to back in the day; all others had to enter through a side servants' door!  A visitor knew they were in the front of the house by the grand archway and hand-carved woodwork.

Lastly, we learned how to make brooms, candles and rope......and visited the goats.  Next stop, Cape Hatteras....
